Open rate in an email consists of many actions from an email server after the email has been sent. These emails consist of all the non bounced emails. An email is not considered open until a few interactions are completed by an email server.
Two actions must happen before an email is considered an open email.
* The recipient of an email must enable the images in preview pane or in full view of an email.
* The recipient must lick a link within the email.
Because most email programs are automatically defaulted to block all images until you click allow images. Most people scan through emails without enabling this feature. So your audience is probably see more of your emails than what your email tracking report shows.
Plain or text only emails are not trackable through the email tracking report. They are only trackable if your audience replies to it. You can ask your ESP to insert a blank image to make these emails trackable.
