Bounce rate in an email is the number of emails that were returned as undeliverable. ESP's will calculate the total number of bounced emails by the total number of emails sent.
Two ways to calculate your own bounce rate.
Take the total number of bounced emails and divide by the total number of emails sent. This will give you the total number of bounces per email.
For example: If you send 100 emails and 20 of them bounced then your bounce ratio is 0.2 for every email sent.
* To get your bounce rate in percentage. Just take the total bounces per email and multiply by 100. This will give your total percentage of bounces within your email.
According to returnpath.com the average bounce rate for a commercial email is 19.2. So don't feel bad if your bounce rate is quite high. It's pretty normal.
