Tracking Website Hits

Today I will talk about, measuring your website traffic. Because it has been quite sometime I have talked about this subject, I will include the page I have created earlier concerning Google Analytics. This is a tool I like to use and works quite well for measuring your website traffic.

Understanding why, measuring traffic to your site is really important. People always hear the term "hits". Even though hits are good, it's not a real good measurement tool.

Hits are defined as, any one file that is downloaded from your web site at any given time. Which includes images, scripts and any style sheet linked to a page will be counted as one hit. So saying this, a page can contain one file or 5000 files.

For example: A regular website compared to google's website. You will see that google really doesn't have any images. But the other web site or your web site might contain a great number of images. Saying that, if one person were to visit a web site with many different images the result could be ten hits. But if ten people were to visit that same website then your result would be 100 hits. Make sense?

Keeping in mind, the less stuff on your website will result in a more accurate hits counter. But us in nature, we love a lot of images, videos and just moving stuff.

In my next post, I will talk about what types of traffic we used to measure to get a more accurate count.
