If you missed my last post I talked about optimizing website for search engines. Today I will talk about optimizing products for search engines.
There are two ways products end up in the search engines.
1) Product page of your website ends up in the regular search engines.
2) Product feed.
A product feed is a spreadsheet of all your products. You submit your products to the search engines and in return they use it to index all your products. Google, Yahoo and Bing all provide a way for you to submit your products and prices.
When creating your product feed, make sure your items are more relevant than the normal web search items that Google, Yahoo and Bing would show in their first page.
"Making your items more relevant is the only way your products will show up."
5 ways to optimize your product feed
* When submitting a feed, make sure to complete all the the information that it's asking for.
People all search different, so you want to cover all ends of the searches.
* Submitting one product at a time.
By submitting one at a time, you can increase your chances of that product showing up in the search engines. This can be done by submitting a web form instead of a spreadsheet. Be sure to optimize each product with a great description. This will make a bigger impact on the web.
* Including images will greatly increase your clicks.
* Update your feed as products and prices change. "Very important."
* Always use custom fields.
For example: If you are selling crispy fruits in many different flavors, you will want to narrow the search down to each and every flavor. People may only be searching for that particular flavor. This, in return gives you a better chance of showing up in the search engines.
