Gathering of E-mail Addresses Legally

When collecting e-mail addresses there are laws you have to abide by to protect yourself. You must receive affirmative permission from your email subscribers before you send certain types of content.

For example: If a person were to enroll into a news letter from you site. You can only send them newsletters pertaining to your site they enrolled on. "NOTHING" else is permitted.

Unfortunately its hard to spot illegal email address collections. So to protect yourself make sure you have permission from everyone on your email list.

If you are wondering what you should do to stay clear of email addresses to protect yourself. I will tell you some good practices.

5 email practices you should abide by to protect yourself.

* Purchasing email lists is really not a good idea. But if you do, make sure where ever you purchase the email addresses that they don't let you keep them on a data file.

Why? Because email addresses are to easy to be bought and sold. Addresses with explicit permission are he one's you want because they are very valuable.

* "NEVER" collect email addresses from other web sites or online directories.

Why? Because you don't have explicit permission.

* Never use an email address collection service. Unless they have confirmed permission from each and every address. Which is impossible for you to know. So I suggest to stay clear.

* Don't ever borrow an address from another business and start sending them emails. Those subscribers have not opt in to start receiving your emails.

* Lastly, Don't ever rent an email list. Most of these email rental companies don't have explicit permission.

Keeping these few email practices in mind when sending an email can protect you from future problems.

  1. Great blog post Tim. I wish people will abide by the rules, as I am one of those people who receive emails from people that I know I have not signed up to. Keep up the good work.
